"Joan of Arc"
American WWI Poster - by Haskell Coffin
Joan of Arc was a popular figure in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. She aroused intense interest in millions of people, from Catholic Saints such as St. Therese of Lisieux to even non-Catholic curmudgeons such as George Bernard Shaw. At the time of this World War I poster, she was extremely famous, universally admired for her courage, her integrity, and among Christians, for her deep faith in God. The fascination culminated in her Canonization shortly after the war, on May 16, 1920, 500 years after her death.
Joan was a hero for everyone, but particularly for women. In the context of World War I, she was used by the United States government as a role model for American women, encouraging them to do their bit for the cause. They could help the nation by buying war stamps, a kind of bond issued at the time by the USA.
They could also pray. This went without saying in a nation that was still deeply devoted to Christ, whether Protestant or Catholic. Joan was a model for both. You can rest assured millions upon millions of American women bowed their heads seeking God's protection for our Country. Ora et labora! Pray and work! Even today Joan serves as a call for prayer warriors!
Haskell Coffin was a famous American artist at the time, part of the Golden Age of Illustration, one of our favorite art styles. He was one of the highest paid illustrators of his time, doing many pictures of woman for covers of magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post. He also did posters for the government, such as this one.
