This gorgeous and classy Greeting card / Christmas card, "Madonna and Child," is by Jeanne Antoinette Labrousse, a London painter and illustrator from the turn of the last century. It comes in a 5x7" size, folded down from 10x7", with a white envelope. As a Madonna and Child, it is properly a Christmas card, but it is so beautiful, and the inside is blank, so you could use it for other occasions, such as Birthdays, Mother's Days, Thank You Cards, or anything. The card has a nice matt finish, which gives it a fine art look The matt finish also makes it easier to write inside compared to a glossy card.
Suitable for framing. It looks GREAT in a gold frame, so you could run over to your local hobby store and get a frame and make a neat little gift of this. Keep several on hand for very tasteful (and faithful!) correspondence, as well as quick gifts!
The original was done around 1918 and first published as a one page color supplement in the February 13, 1918 issue of a magazine called The Studio, which was dedicated to Art Nouveau. Labrousse, whose parents had emigrated from Paris to London, had a long and happy art career, illustrating many books and having numerous art shows at the Royal Academy and elsewhere. You can find her work online in old books and at the auction houses. Today this is by far her most famous painting . Her work is exquisite and charming. We have spent a lot of time looking at this picture and enjoying it.
