Cosmos, Body, and Soul by St Hildegard
Cosmos, Body, and Soul by St Hildegard
Saint Hildegard of Bingen was a medieval abbess, prophet, artist, composer, physician, advisor to popes, and has of late been declared a Doctor of the Church, one of only 36 . As a mystic, she had visions, and wrote books about them. This is one of her visions. She is painted in the lower left hand corner, as witness.
This vision is one of the “Werk Gottes,” or “Works of God.” Specifically, this one is referred to as “Cosmos, Body, and Soul.” At the center of the vision is a wheel of life, with the seasons and the life cycle of a man. It is from her last book, Liber Divinorum Operum, or The Book of Divine Works, which has ten complex visions, including this one.
The International Society of Hildegard von Bingen Studies offers commentary on the book and visions at www hildegard-society (dot) org.
