"Lourdes Grotto"
Pilgrims Gathered at the Cave of Massabielle
For a long time we've wanted to offer a picture of the grotto at Lourdes. There are so many photographs and paintings, but we couldn't find the right one. Then we came across this charming piece! We almost never include anything in our collection which isn't full of color, but this one really caught our eye. We love how lively the scene is! See the priest explaining the holy water to the man with a cane. We love the row of crutches, abandoned by those cured by Our Lady! This lithograph was done not long after the actual appearance of Mary to Bernadette in 1858. We hope it conveys the spirit of the place - one of a lively faith and holy presence - which is still that same way today.
A. Bes and F. Dubreuil were French publishers in the 1830s to the 1850s. This might have been published in magazines or newspapers of the day as they weren't yet using photographs. The apparition of Mary and all the cures were big new items at that time. Lithograph. Anonymous artist. 26.2 x 40.1 cm.
(source: Wellcome Library - London)
** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a white border of about 0.5" inch for 5x7", 1.3" for 8.5x11", or 1.6" for 11x14" pictures. All Approx! Fine art printers do this because the images are almost never the same rectangular ratio of the standard paper sizes. It also gives the prints a finished look, and lets them look good in a frame without a matt.
- Acid-free paper
- Archival pigments, rated to last for generations.
- Cardboard backer
- Above story of the art
- Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal clear bag.
Thanks for your interest!
Thanks!
