Magnificat
Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale

"Our lady sings Magnificat,
With tones surpassing sweet..."

In this illustration, Mary is surrounded by some of her dear ones, singing her Magnifcat. This passage comes from a poem called "The New Jerusalem" written around 1600 by an anonymous poet describing the wonders of Heaven, the home he longs for. According to the poet, each of Mary's companions "bears their part / Sitting about her feet." We each do our part.

This beautiful, idyllic scene was painted by Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale for her 1920 The Book of Old English Songs and Ballads. She was one of the most famous illustrators of her day, at the height of the golden age of illustration. We carry many of her works. They are all lovely and graceful, and capture some of the mystic beatify and holiness of Mary and the Saints.

** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border all around the image of about .5" for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17" and 16x20" (shown in the last photo). All Approx! The white space gives the framed picture a finished look without using a mat.
