Our disobedient young couple are slinking away on the left, looking small and vulnerable. They have been thrown out of their home in Eden, which we can see is a beautiful paradise. They are entering the dark, shadowy world full of storms and death. Notice the waterfall above them next to the volcano; it’s kind of a solemn pun on the verb Fall. This is the Fall of Man, the thing that our Lord, out of his love for us, has redeemed us from. If you want, you can display it with a creation painting, and a few pictures from Jesus’s life, to show the outline of the whole story.
There are a lot of things to look at in this painting. You can kind of sample it and piece together aspects of the fall. One thing, I find it interesting that water flows from within Eden to the fallen world, I think sustaining its life. And notice that our point of view is in the dark world, as we are unfortunately, even redeemed, still in this world, at a remove from Eden.
Maybe my all-time favorite painter, Thomas Cole (1801-1848) was an American painter of the Hudson Valley School, the first American painter that made the Europeans sit up a little straighter. He did beautiful landscapes which he elevated by including narratives and symbols. In college, I had a poster of his Ages of Man (Youth) taped to my wall, and I made a special trip with Sue to the National Gallery about 35 years ago to see it in person.
His works in person are large and astonishing. We don’t offer this one in the small size because you would miss too much detail. He painted it in 1828. Oil on canvas. 39.7 x 54.5 inches. In the collection at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border around the image. Approximately 0.5" wide for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17 and 16x20. For the two poster sizes, 18x24 and 24x36, we use 0.5" borders. We do this because the ratio of the rectangle of the art almost never matches the rectangle of the paper, and if it did happen to match one size, it would not match the others. Most fine art printers do this because otherwise they’d have to crop the art or warp it to make it fit the paper. The border looks good. It gives the picture a faux matted appearance.
There is almost always a little more border either on the left-right sides, or the top-bottom, depending on whether the ratio of the art is wider or taller than the paper.
We make Archival Quality fine art prints:
– Acid-free paper
– Archival pigments
– Cardboard backer for sizes 11x14 and less.
– Above story of the art
– Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal-clear bag.
– Rated to last 200+ years without fading if kept dry and out of the direct sun.
Thanks for your interest!
