Dorothy Webster Hawksley R.I. (1884–1970) was an English artist who studied at the Royal Academy Schools. Her painting style was a mix of Old Masters and Japanese prints, and she had an exquisite sense of color. Her delicate paintings are usually of woman, sometimes of mothers, even though she never married.
This superb painting of Mary conveys a delicacy and femininity about Mary that is almost ethereal. The tree behind her has an epic presence, and the reflection of Mary in the pool below her suggests some kind of investment she has in the world. if you look closely, there is even a white fence faintly visible behind the tree, which makes it a cloistered garden.
We love this picture, and since it was painted in 1918, we can offer it to you. Hawksley painted our favorite picture of the Visitation in 1939, so good Lord willing, we’ll offer it in a few more years. She also has some other Catholic pieces that are subtle and devout, including a Crucifixion painting we hope to list. (source: www.bonhams.com)
