Mary and Jesus on the Clouds
Carlos Schwabe
This charming picture shows Mary and Jesus standing on swirling yellow clouds, overlooking the earth below. It's the perspective we had when we were little of where we thought God was. Here, Mary and Jesus are full of motherly and childly love for each other; but also given their vantage over the earth, they are represented as the royalty they are, the King and Queen of the world. And Heaven is full of love.
It was a cover design by Carlos Schwabe (1866-1926) for an illustrated book on Jesus. Schwabe was a German artist who had come to Paris, the center of the art world at that time. The painting is Art Nouveau, one of our favorite styles. We always have our eye out for a Catholic piece of Art Nouveau art, as they are rare. They still seem fresh to us.
We may list the back cover someday; it's beautiful too, but it is a symbolic picture of the life of Jesus, drawn out in circles and symbolic flowers, and perhaps a little too abstruse. They are both housed at the Met Museum in New York. 1895. Watercolor over graphite with partial gilding. 13 3/8 × 10 5/16 in.
** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a white border of about 0.5" inch for 5x7", 1.3" for 8.5x11", or 1.6" for 11x14" pictures. All Approx! Fine art printers do this because the images are almost never the same rectangular ratio of the standard paper sizes. It also gives the prints a finished look, and lets them look good in a frame without a matt.
- Acid-free paper
- Archival pigments, rated to last for generations.
- Cardboard backer
- Above story of the art
- Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal clear bag.
Thanks for your interest!
Thanks!
