Charming, beautiful, personal, pastoral, cozy, devout, reverent-honestly, we love Matthäus Schiestl's art so much, we're kind of looney about it. It warms our hearts. It's the kind of art we love having in our home, filling our atmosphere. Matthäus Schiestl (1869-1939) was a German artist known primarily for doing Catholic pictures, mostly of Jesus and Mary set in the German forest. They are all wonderful, with a safe, secluded feel- a mixture of sweetly ordinary and deeplly mystical.
This picture has two of his favorite subjects: Jesus and Mary and an attractive little chapel. It's the kind of place we'd like to visit to go pray in. Two angels guard the door, and mother and child are out in the garden, enjoying the flowers.
Friend, we live in kind of jaded world, where there isn't much space for Jesus, Mary, and flowers. But in his day, Matthäus Schiestl was very famous. He even made postage stamps for the German governent, his art was so generally accepted.
The painting is called in German, Maria mit dem Jesuskind an der Kapelle. Original is oil on wood. 29.5 x 31.5 in.
** IMPORTANT PLEASE READ ** We print with a white border around the image. The image is not quite square, so the image size of the 8.5x11 paper is not quite 6x6. The image size of the 11x14 is not quite 7.9x7.9. The image size of the 5x7 is not quite 4x4. On the 13x17 and 16x20 paper, the image size is about 10x10 and 13x13, respectively. On the 18x24 and 24x36, we can do the margin on the short side to as low as 1/2 an inch, which we will do if you don't ask for a custom margin. That would mae the image size about 17x17 and 23x23 respectively.
