New! O Salutaris Hostia – Eucharistic Adoration – Restored Vintage Holy Card – Bouasse-Jeune – pack of 10/100/1000
O Salutaris Hostia, O Saving Victim, is a hymn written by St. Thomas Aquinas. It was used at the first Feast of Corpus Christi, established in the Church in 1264 AD by Pope Urban IV. We usually only sing two verses of this beautiful hymn, but we've included another verse for you. The full hymn is called Verbum supernum prodiens, with six verses. It was sung at Lauds. The music was written much later.
The Feast of Corpus Christi is celebrated in the United States on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday, which is the eighth Sunday following Easter. The month of April is dedicated to the Eucharist in the Catholic Church.
The front of the card says, "I will forever sing the mercies of the Lord." It is from Psalm 89:1. The original card is by Bouasse-Jeune, one of the great holy card printers of Paris in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and one of our favorites.
