This beautiful Marian card is the oldest known icon of Mary in Rome. It dates from no later than 500 AD, and much more likely it came from 400 AD or earlier. In Medieval times it was often attributed to St. Luke. It demonstrates the existence of Marian devotion in the Early Church.
The image has been in custody of the Dominican sisters in Rome since February 28, 1221, when St. Dominic himself carried this icon in a procession to a new convnet. They still have it today.
On the back we put the oldest known prayer to Our Lady. The parchment fragment we show in the background dates to 250 AD. The prayer itself probably dates much earlier. It also demonstrates an early Church devotion to Mary, and this is the earliest written record that we’ve found so far that calls her the Theotokos, or Mother of God.
We hope you’ll have your spirit lifted by this card. You can also offer this card to lift the spirits of your spiritually uncertain relations or Protestant friends, as these are some of the earliest proofs that establish that the Early Church had a great devotion to Mary.
We have this as an art print elsewhere in our shop.
Thank you for your interest.
