Antique German Holy Card
The Precious Blood is the Blood of Christ. We have been purchased at a price (1 Corinthians 6:20). St. Peter said, "You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathers … with the precious blood of Christ," (1 Peter 1:18-19).
We tend to think of blood in terms of modern chemistry, an iron-rich fluid that brings oxygen and nutrients to the cells of our body. To the ancients and the faithful, it is more than that, it is life, as in the phrase “lifeblood.” The Church teaches in the Catechism, paragraph 1324, “The Eucharist is ‘the source and summit of the Christian life.’ The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch."
