Saint Thérèse, Aged 15
Restored Photograph
Our friend Thérèse is just fifteen here in this picture, but she looks older. That was a deliberate ploy by Thérèse over the previous year, as she had been denied her heart's desire to enter the convent because she was "too young." We suspect Céline, her sister, who would have been 19 at the time, would have been helping her. According to the Archives at Lisieux, the photograph was taken by Mme Besnier, a photographer from Lisieux. The negative was retouched at the shoulder and the back of the bodice so that Thérèse is straighter; we assume to make her look more grown-up. Also, there had been a girlish bow on the dress, but that too had been removed from the negative. (In the before picture of the before-and-after, you can see some of the "ghosting" left around the shoulder from the doctoring of the negative. We also show the full picture--which we do not ship!--so you can see the effect of making her look straighter.)
Her work paid off to enter the convent early. It had included an audacious face-to-face plea with the Pope. She entered the Carmel at Lisieux in April of 1888, just days after this picture.
We have restored this photo to a vividness that wouldn't have been possible until a few years ago. As with all our restorations, we hope this brings you closer to our Saint, lets you see her as a living girl, a person just like us, and ultimately, we hope this helps you draw nearer to Jesus. This is our mission and our joy, to bring you beautiful Catholic art, to help evangelize and strengthen the faith.
!!!IMPORTANT !!! The Image is smaller than the paper! There is a blank white margin around the paper, 1/2" for 5x7", 1.3" for 8.5x11", and 1.6" for 11x14". This border lets our pictures look good framed without a matt.
- Acid-free paper.
- Archival-quality print, rated to last for generations without fading.
- Cardboard backer.
- Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal clear bag
- Comes with the above story of the image.
Standard size. We think it looks best in a black frame, but any of the frames could work, depending on your decor.
