The Virgin
by Joseph Stella
We fell in love with this gorgeous painting of the Virgin Mary the first time we saw it. The colors are rich, the arrangement is delightful, and the tone is warm and devotional. Mary is the "enclosed garden" of the Song of Songs. She is fruitful, providing all eligible graces to the faithful. We have looked at this painting many times but are still discovering more within its beauty.
Joseph Stella was an American painter, born in Italy in 1877. He immigrated to the United States at a young age and, supported by his brothers, took up painting. He had a long, successful career in art and passed away in 1946. We wanted to offer this painting to you the minute we saw it but had to wait some years until it went out of copyright. He has two other paintings of Mary that we are very fond of. As of this writing, we offer one other in our shop -- Search for "Mother Most Pure." This painting is housed at the Brooklyn Museum. 1926. Oil on canvas, 39 11/16 x 38 3/4 in.
** IMPORTANT ** The picture of the square, light brown wooden frame has paper in it approx 11x11", size of image in that frame is approx 8x8". Unmatted with white border. The simple 9x9 gold frame has a small picture in it of a little less that 6x6 image size, surrounded by a white border.
** IMPORTANT ** The unframed prints also have a white border around the paper. About 1.3" inch border left-right for the 8.5x11 paper, and about 1.6" left-right for the 11x14" paper.
- 8.5 x 11" or 11x14" acid-free paper
- Archival pigments, rated to last for generations.
- Cardboard backer
- Above story of the art
- Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal clear bag.
Thanks for your interest!
Thanks!
